Argentina: ECDC situation report on outbreak of influenza A(H1N1) 10 May 2009

Main developments in past 24 hours

- 11 new confirmed cases reported from EU and EFTA countries;

- Seven more confirmed cases with in-country transmission in the UK;

- One more confirmed case with possible in-country transmission in Italy;

- Outside of EU and EFTA countries, 4201 confirmed cases;

- Increase of the number of confirmed cases in the US of approximately 30%;

- Three more deaths in Mexico;

- First death in Costa Rica;

This report is based on official information provided by the national public health websites, or through other official communication channels. In addition, outside of the EU and EFTA countries, media reports from credible sources are included when quoting national authorities. An update on the number of probable and confirmed cases as of 10 May, 08:00 hours CEST, is presented in Table 1 and Table 2.

European Union and EFTA countries

Within the last 24 hours, 11 new confirmed cases were reported in the EU and EFTA countries. Eight of these new cases are reported from the UK, of which seven are due to in-country transmission. Six of them are part of the previously reported cluster from a school in south-west London and one is a close contact to a previously reported case. In addition, one more case was reported from Italy with possible in-country transmission. This 2 year old case is a member of a family cluster. (http://www.ministerosalute.it/imgs/C_17_comunicati_2240_testo.rtf)

Eight cases with in-country transmission were reported from EU and EFTA countries in the past 24 hours. The cumulative number of confirmed cases with in-country transmission in the EU and EFTA countries is 36 from 4 EU/EFTA countries.

The cumulative number of confirmed cases in EU/EFTA countries is 184, and 1 probable case. To date thirteen EU and EFTA countries reported confirmed cases.

Outside of European Union and EFTA countries

Outside the EU and EFTA countries, the number of confirmed cases increased to 4201 influenza A (H1N1) virus infections, reported from 16 countries (Table 2). The first death from Costa Rica was reported in a 53 year old male with underlying disease.

Three more deaths were reported form Mexico.

The US reported additional 615 confirmed cases. The increase of approximately one third is mainly due to the increase of testing.

More cases are being confirmed from Central- and South America: Costa Rica (2 new, total 3), Guatemala (2 new, total 3), Panama (2 new, total 3), El Salvador (2), Argentina (1), Brazil (2 new, total 6), Colombia. (1)

Assessment of situation for the EU and EFTA countries

No sustained community transmission is currently reported from any EU and EFTA countries, however sporadic cases of in-country transmission are continuing to be identified.
